HELLLLOOOOOO and welcome to AJOURNEY2TRIMNHEALTHY. My name is Sandy, and I am a single mom of one athletic teenage young man…(I am the sister on the left in the above photo).
I started my journey on February 20, 2015, and here is my story…
In April of 2001, after what appeared to be normal healthy menstrual cycles, I was diagnosed with premature menopause. Doctors said I had a 24% chance of conceiving with fertility procedures, and they handed me an adoption packet (not what a newlywed wanted to hear). I walked out of there thinking…”these doctors are not God”…and yes, God did have different plans. In September of 2002, after 14 months of not a single cycle, one appeared, then another, and in November of 2002, my son was conceived. I had a normal and healthy pregnancy, and he was born on his due date after just 3 1/2 hours after my first contraction (no time for drugs either!)
Well life certainly changed after that! I nursed him for one year…never to have a cycle again (I thank God for my miracle child). Time passed and in 2010, I found myself to be a single mom and deep in POST menopause with the pounds starting to creep on. Hormone Replacement Therapy was not an option for me as the side affects far outweighed the affects of menopause…I decided to make lifestyle changes to keep them at bay.
On February 1, 2014, my 52-year old sister died instantly of a heart attack (picture above is at her memorial service)…I was 46 and had tipped the scale at 170 lbs. and am only 5’4″. My other 3 sisters (who at the time were all at least 30 lbs. overweight) could not believe how much weight I had gained over the past 2 – 3 years (35 lbs.!!!). We were all devastated at the loss of our sister who was the second youngest (I am the youngest). I was burdened on the plane ride home from her funeral and wanted to start “something” in honor of her to start a health trend for family and friends. Her name was Cora Ulrich…I came up with “I C U Have a Healthy Heart” (the C & U for Cora Ulrich).
Entering the winter of 2014, I was determined not to gain any weight…well most of us know how that goes (especially in the winter)…I tipped the scale at 177 lbs. by January 2015, and for the first time in my life, I started to feel what depression felt like. I got to a place of hopelessness with my weight. My doctor told me to eat 1200 calories per day, and I knew that feeling hungry and unsatisfied was not for me.
At a baby shower, I overheard two ladies talking about how one of them had lost 20 lbs. since October (I still was too discouraged to think it would work for me). One week later, I WAS DONE! I approached Michelle and asked her what helped her to start shedding pounds…of course I had noticed several weeks earlier that she was trimming down. 🙂
I ran home and ordered my THM book and immediately started separating my fats and carbs AND lost 2 lbs. before my book arrived. My first goal was to lose 10 lbs. by Easter…Ummm ACHIEVED by April 1 (no fooling)! I had actually lost 13.8 lbs by April 14. My second goal was to be down 20 lbs. by the end of June 2015…Ummm ACHIEVED by June 12…gone! As of August 3, I have trimmed off a total of 24 lbs. my energy levels are back, I feel healthier, and I look younger!
