I’m Hangry!!

hangryEver been there??   I know I have.  My niece Katelyn coined this term (or at least we thought she did), and my Husband and I and thought it was very funny.  However, in reality it was quite true.  While on vacation, my niece told my husband that my “grouchy” mood was because her sweet, adorable, and beautiful (shameless plug) Aunt was “Hangry”….a.k.a. HUNGRY!!!

While that was a few years ago….this little adjective has remained in our vocabulary….until THM arrived on the scene!!!  Since I began eating the THM way, I don’t have the highs and lows in my blood sugar that cause those “Hangry” feelings.  By eating every three hours, my blood sugar levels stay in the steady normal range.  By not combining my fuels (Fats & Glucose), I don’t get the spikes in my blood sugar!!!  When blood sugar spikes…Insulin surges out to control the body’s blood sugar level.  Only, after the surge, often more Insulin is delivered than what your body needs, and in a few hours, the blood sugar level falls too low….causing that angry, foggy, grumpy….“Give me food right now….or some body is gonna get hurt feelings!”  By eating every three hours the THM way, Insulin is delivered only when needed.

The Science behind the THM plan is spot on and, I’m happy to say Hangry is a relative term around here these days!!!

Well THFF (Trim Healthy Friend Forever)…although these may not be sooo simple, they are easy once you perfect them…and sure are YUMMILICIOUS 🙂

I LOVE TRIM HEALTHY MAMA SMOOTHIES and here is my list (in no particular order…’cause I love ’em all):

Fat Stripping Frappa – Page 240…Big Boy Smoothie – Page 242 (I usually just make it in Fuel Pull mode, but if you want to switch it up to S, just add a tablespoon of coconut oil for a real treat)…Chocomocho – Page 248…Peach Cobbler Protein Shake…this would be an E on THM.

TIP:  I have worked on the technique to perfect these…and what works best for me is to add all of my liquids, flavorings and sweetener (my favorite is the THM Pure Stevia for smoothies)…then blend…while the blender is on, I gently remove the lid and sprinkle in the glucomannan…I turn blender off then go get the ice out of the freezer…I add 8 – 12 ice cubes (depending on your preferred texture) then blend on high again…sometimes I add a splash or two of water and blend up again to get my preferred consistency…last but not least as Pearl & Serene teach…add the magical Whey Protein Powder and blend for a final time…DRINK UP and KEEP TRIMMIN’ OFF!!!

Fall has officially arrived in the North East! I am always a little sad to see Summer leaf (Haha.. I made a funny) get it???……Never mind…… I know, it’s Monday!!

Any Who, it was in the 40’s here this morning, and as I sit here writing my meal plan and grocery list for the week, I just had to share this with you all!

This week at Price Chopper,  you can purchase Eight O’clock coffee for BOGO (Buy One get One) free!! Also I checked the Eight O’clock site and they are offering $1 Coupon off 1 bag.   SCORE!!

If you haven’t tried it..Trimmaccino Bullet Proof Coffee..it  is a decadent replacement for those oh so sugary, expensive, wallet draining drinks!! I just Love the smoothness of this special treat, and it’s so very healthy for you too! I haven’t run the numbers, but it’s around $5 bucks for one of these types drinks at Starbucks. They are filled with Sugar (an arch THM enemy), and flavored syrups. You could make literally ..oh let’s see …100 drinks from one bag of Coffee!!! Forgiveness

THM - Forgiveness 2

DEFINITION OF FORGIVENESS:  To cease to feel resentment against (an offender).  The word “forgive” means to wipe the slate clean, to pardon, to cancel a debt.  It is important to remember that forgiveness is not granted because a person deserves to be forgiven.  Instead, it is an act of love, mercy, and grace.

I have not followed Trim Healthy Mama exactly…however, it is the most “forgiving” meal plan I have ever been on.  It is soooo easy to get back on track…just by waiting 3 hours…that’s all it takes!!!  Girlies, forgive yourself when you fall off track, move on, and just KEEP TRIMMIN’ OFF!!!

Maybe I’m Just Thirsty!

How often do we reach for food, when in reality we are just Thirsty…Actually by the time you feel you are thirsty you are already dehydrated!!

The body is approx. 60% – 75% water.  Our cells are bathed in fluid as well as the majority of our Organs.  Our body suffers greatly when circulating volume is depleted.  Remember how weak and awful you feel after a visit from the GI bug??  That’s because you’re dehydrated!

Early in my career, I worked in an Emergency Department.  I remember a particularly busy evening and one of the Docs, came to me and said, “I will be right back…I’ve got a headache, and I need to grab a drink”.  I thought it was so that he could take medication.  When he came back, he said “works every time”.  When I questioned him, he answered, that when he got a headache, he always tries hydrating first with 16 oz. of water.  He shared with me that a headache is one of the first signs of dehydration.  I never forgot that little lesson!!!

As a Health care provider, I can tell you that it is an absolute challenge to get in all the fluid I should each day..I have recently returned to a nearly full-time work schedule, and one of my greatest challenges in regards to the THM lifestyle in my return to work…is making sure I consume enough liquids.  I am making every attempt to make this a priority.  If any of you have any great tips or suggestions, I would love to hear them 🙂

One of the great tricks of the THM lifestyle is the “Sippers”.  By continually sipping healthy hydrating drinks all day, we are not only keeping our body well hydrated…we are staving off hunger.

I hope you have all gotten the new THM Cookbook  Eat Up and Slim Down.  I love that they included a whole section on the Sipper Drinks (Starting on Pg. 396).  My two favorites…are the Good Girl Moonshine and the Shrinker.  I recently have tried the Apple Pie Sip and love that it includes the Vitamin C powder.  It not only keeps us hydrated, it has such goodness for our body.

Staying hydrated has a ton of health benefits…Aids our digestion, (Stop drinking for any length of time and see how that goes!!), keeps toxins flushed from our body, helps with the electrical rhythm of our Heart, and so many more…

Single Mama Simple Success #4

Keeping it simple THM Style…It’s DINNER time 🙂 I love dinner because it is mostly a “S”atisfying Scrumptious time for us…in the Fall and Winter, I use the weekends to prepare meals and utilize the freezer to bulk up for the busy times…in the Summer, it’s anything goes as this is a SUPER busy time for us with family vacation and baseball.

  • Our absolute favorite is Taco Salad…for an “S” we use ground beef and cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and whatever veggies that need to be used up.  Sometimes I’ll drizzle a little ranch dressing on it and other times, I’ll use sour cream…for “E”, we use ground turkey or chicken, black or kidney beans, NO CHEESE…either way I choose to make this dinner, I always put a couple of dollops of salsa on too!  Your kids get to have some healthy tortilla chips, but you should pass on the chips for weight loss mode, especially in an S setting or you will crossover.
  • For Drive Thru Sandy Sue…I’ll get a double cheeseburger at Five Guys (hold the bun), grilled onions, mushrooms and green peppers with mayo and a scant amount of ketchup (not on plan, unless homemade).
  • Meatloaf (takes 5 minutes to mix all the ingredients)…stick it in the pan, shove it in the oven, eat a cheese stick if you are ravenous and make a salad with some kind of dressing with fats (avocado dressing)…my son is not a huge potato or rice guy so that makes it super easy for me.  He gets plenty of carbs elsewhere…pair with cauliflower mashed potatoes (Page 361)…these are super easy, quick, and I add a couple of chunks of cheddar too!
  • I like to cook chicken breasts with the skin on so it doesn’t dry out (but don’t eat the skin in an E setting)…again, stick it in the pan, shove it in the oven…on this “E” dinner night, I will make jazzed up brown rice using Trader Joe’s frozen variety.  Just add a little bit of chicken stock, sea salt, garlic powder, chopped broccoli, maybe a scant pinch of cayenne pepper, and 21 Salute Seasoning also from Trader Joe’s…add a wedge of laughing cow light cheese to make it more like Pearl & Serene’s creamless creamy veggie style, but you will need to melt the cheese in the chicken broth before adding it to the rice.

Energy

THM - E Alphabet

DEFINITION OF ENERGY:  The strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity…ability to be active…the physical or mental strength that allows you to do things…natural enthusiasm and effort.

WOW!!!  Since I started the Trim Healthy Mama meal plan (don’t you dare tell me I’m on a diet 🙂 ), I have so much more energy and strength.  I do have to admit, as much as I love to exercise, I am at a chapter of life that allows for very little structured exercise.  Ladies, there is a lot of success to be had even if you cannot exercise.  I have lost 25 lbs. in 6 months with very little exercise…you too can have energy!

Chorizo Taco Bake – S Meal

Ok…So I am clearly not a food photographer, but this recipe is a keeper.  My husband loved this dish, and it is a one Skillet wonder!  Wish I could take credit for creating it, but I found it at another site called Cooking Keto with Kristi.  It is super simple, and it was the first time I have cooked with Chorizo…a Mexican Sausage…I found mine at our local Aldi. It adds a ton of flavor!!!  So without further ado here it is:

1-1/2 lbs. Ground Beef

6 oz. Chorizo (remove from casing) mine came in a 12 oz. package

1 cup chopped Green Pepper

1 cup chopped Onion

14 oz. crushed Tomatoes

4-6 oz. Green Chilies (Optional)

1/3 cup block Cream Cheese (I used Trader Joes)

2 cups shredded Cheddar Cheese

1 tsp. chopped Garlic

Taco Seasonings to your liking…I used Cumin…Onion Powder…Black Pepper…Himalayan Pink Salt &  Chili Powder, and a touch of Creole Seasoning…My Hubby likes it spicy 🙂

Brown Ground Beef and chopped Chorizo in a skillet.  I don’t have a Cast Iron skillet, but if you have one that would work best.  I just used my regular frying pan (It is oven safe)…If not using Grass Fed Beef…drain and rinse.  Add in green pepper and onion, and sauté until soft.  Then add in crushed Tomatoes and Seasonings.  This is a dish you own with your preferred flavor profile…If you like it spicy…Bring it on.  If you don’t…use whatever spices you like…Then add in Cream Cheese.  This takes a minute to melt down.  Mix well.  Add in Green Chilies.  Let simmer together for 5 minutes.  Take off heat…sprinkle in 1 cup of shredded Cheese.  Mix together well.  Then sprinkle top with remaining Cheese and put in oven.  I put my pan on a cookie sheet lined with foil just in case it bubbled over!!

Bake at 350 for approx. 20-25 minutes, until bubbly and cheese is melted.  I served with a Tossed Green Salad!!

It’s LUNCH TIME…keep it simple chickies…

  • This mama enjoys a Wendy’s Strawberry Fields Full Salad…I skip the sugary dressing and request the regular ranch dressing…because remember THFF (Trim Healthy Friend Forever)…FAT DOESN’T MAKE YOU FAT 🙂
  • Joseph’s Pita (or ½ of a Lavish Wrap) {Oat Bran, Flaxseed & Whole Wheat variety}, deli meat of roast beef, turkey, chicken, or tuna with mayo, veggies…oh and don’t forget the cheese…for an oh so “S”atisfying meal.
  • 2 Slices plan approved bread (sprouted is my favorite), lean deli meat or real turkey, chicken, or tuna, mustard, veggies – for an “E”xtraordinary yummo sandwich.
  • Waldorf Cottage Cheese Salad – E (Page 300) both Michelle and I love this one!
  • One more thing…LEFTOVERS FROM DINNER…but I haven’t talked to you yet about how we do dinner at this crazy busy Mama’s home…so until next time…remember to just keep TRIMMIN’ OFF 🙂

I can relate to this photo…

Fat distorts our bodies…

Any of you, that have been on plan any length of time, know this to be true.

As the Fat (Adipose Tissue ~ The Medical name for Fat) increases, it distorts our body’s “Normal” image.

Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT)…the fat around our middles…is especially troublesome.  If you can pinch some around your Tummy…then Mama you’ve got some!  I won’t bore you all with a lot of Medical Jargon (Google it…you will get hundreds of hits), but this fat makes us sick.  It pre-disposes us to several Endocrine and Metabolic diseases.  Namely, Type 2 Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease.

Obesity causes a low grade inflammation which is very bad for our bodies, on multiple levels.  There has been some excellent research done in Metabolic, Endocrine disease, and its cause.  Unless you want to read the piles of Scientific Periodicals, Journal Articles and Research Papers (I actually like reading these) I can save you some time.  The results are in, and while the news isn’t good, I’ve got some encouraging Words.

This may be where you are at right now, but this does not have to be your end!!!!  This is preventable.  This is PREVENTABLE!!!!!  You CAN choose to do something…..You CAN make a change…..One step at a time.

Losing middle fat is a huge deal, and it’s totally worth any effort you have to put forth to do it!!!  THM way of eating is an excellent place to start.  If you are struggling to lose weight, regain your health and find your trim. You are in the right place.
